I think this is interesting (and funny) because essentially we don't really get any closer to the environment we inhabit by extending our bodies further into the space. We are then just taking up a different space, but the non-space is equally informative to the construction of our selves. Meaning the space we cannot see or inhabit, a more intangible social fabric that we exist within.
so true! iàve always wondered what it would have been like living when everyone wore huge skirts with crinolins and couldnàt get any closer than the radius of the hem of their skirt to any physical object or human. i imagine being able to define where your personal space begins through the use of your garments would be quite nice. i also imagine bad breath would be less of an issue
My pop used to do something like that with his walking stick. Waving it around in front of him as he walked so that people would get out of his way. Its as if the little capsule of space he created around himself by the waving said "This is where I begin"... "and this is where I continue to begin. So begin somewhere else, away from my beginning."
